I can't believe anyone voted no on this. Smoking around anyone is harmful to their health, especially children! Seriously, if you think it's ok to smoke around children, you shouldn't be parents. Your child is more important than your stupid habit or addiction.

I agree with you to the fullest mommywarri, this is such a bad and dangerous habit that could cause serious health problems in the future to kids around people that smoke around them, and also is a bad example for them.

While I agree with you both that you should never smoke around your kids I don't feel that it's the place of the gov to make that type of LAW. It also says nothing about smoking in the car or home when kids aren't around. Also, family, friends, or even sitters might have a smoking habit, and smoke when kids aren't there, but not when they ARE watching your kids. There just isn't a good way for the gov't to step in and make a law about this without seriously affecting our private lives. If you have kids, you should be smart enough not to smoke around them, or in areas where it can bring serious effects to them. It shouldn't be the gov't's job to hold our hands as we hold our babies' hands.

I agree with lyricmezzosoprano. The gov't. has their hands in too much stuff. If you have kids, you should be smart enough to not smoke near them. My husband smokes and we have a 9 week old at home. He has never smoked in the house and since I was pregnant he has not smoked in the car with me and does not smoke when he has the baby. It's just common sense.

I live in Louisiana, it is already against the law to smoke in your car with children WOO HOO!!! I think that it should also be illegal to smoke in your home!!!

I have never smoked and have never allowed anyone to smoke around my kids. We don't even visit my mother-in-law's home because she allows her son (who lives with her) to smoke in the house. I can't jeopardize my kids' health by allowing them to inhale dangerous toxins. However, I am concerned about legislating this type of thing. What about parents who allow their kids to eat fast food every day, or drink too much caffeine? What about parents who allow their kids to watch inappropriate movies or play violent video games or play outside unsupervised? Where does it end?

I voted no. I personally believe it's disgusting to smoke and cruel to smoke in front of your kids. I also believe it's disgusting to feed your child anything but organic and cruel to provide them junk food and fast food. But do I want the government passing a law that says I CAN'T give them fast food? Absolutely not. Would you have wanted the government to tell you it's against the law to give your child formula because you are physically unable to breast feed? This question is so narrow in its scope; but the truth of the matter is if you make this illegal, what's next?

Amen TinkerBell!!!! I am glad that someone else really thought about their answer. I voted no as well for the very same reasons. Do we really need the government to mandate what is the right thing to do by our children???? This is America and we are a free society and to think that the majority of people think that a law is needed for something like this is really somewhat scary. Go on little sheep....let the government dictate every ounce of your existance. We can do the right thing by our children without the government making a law to direct us to.

I admit I am for parents to not smoke around there children or around the things there kids play with everyday. But being informed about the harm smoke does is the one thing that should form parents thinking about second hand and also third hand smoke which is what is left behind after second hand smoke. Its in the carpets, tables and even toys children play with. Look it up, get informed and make the right choice..for your children, not your habit

Knowingly exposing children to cigarette smoke which causes cancer is outrageous. I know it is really difficutl to quit smoking, but parents and/or caregivers who care for children should actually be supportive of keeping children healthy. If it takes a law to give them the extra "push" they need to stop smoking around their kids or to quit smoking altogether (even better), then I would support it.

I agree with Imacolor, Tinkerbell, & the like. I am not a smoker and will not expose my baby to a smoking environment. That being said, part of being a US Citizen is having the right to make choices. If a person chooses to smoke in the home with their child, unfortunately it is their right. It should not be dictated by the government.

I understand the whole "I don't want the government telling me how to raise my child" argument, but lets think about this logically for a minute. There are already child endangerment laws that regulate what we can and cant do with and around our or anyone's kids, and this would just be another one. It's a known fact that second hand smoke is extremely harmful to anyone that inhales it, especially kids. NOBODY can argue smoking around children isn't endangering them, so why not add it to the laws already in effect. How can anyone argue with something that's only there to protect our children???

And not for nothing, those that think we don't need laws to tell us the right things to do are crazy. Just because you have kids doesn't mean you know how to be a parent. I know plenty of people who chose to do harmful things like smoking around their kids. I personally don't need the government to tell me the right things to do, and there are plenty as well who dont. But there are also plenty that do need to be told. Why do you think we have laws to begin with??? Because some people have bad judgement or just don't care.

Because second hand smoke is just as bad as smoking yourself. And were do you see a baby or toddler begging for a cigarette.

While I completely agree that people should not smoke around their kids, I don't think that we should legislate this. I really don't want the Orwellian "Cigarette Police" coming to my home on a regular basis to make sure that I or my wife are not smoking around my children.
And no, I am not a smoker and yes, I am a registered Democrat.

I agree with you all who voted no, i for one had an close friend to pass away for lung cancer he has never smoked a day in his life but he was raised in a household that did not care enough to leave the room or better yet go outside so i am totally against smoking in a car or house where babies, infants,or kids live,GOD BLESS AMERICA.

I voted no even though smoking is horribble, stinks, and is hazardous to everyone's health. However, my mother was famous for smoking with the windows in the car rolled up on hot days. Back in the day, it did not matter. Even though I no longer smoke, giving the government, locally and federally, more leverage to act as a "big brother" the less freedom we have and the more communist we become. So far, laws only work with honest people who want to do the right thing. Bush Jr. is no longer President. Keeping track of ordinary citizens is not the government's job. If I don't like someone smoking, I kindly ask them not to or move away from them until they are donbe.

This is for mommywarrior. First of all, for you to call smokers bad parents is just ignorant. My husband and I both are smokers. We do not smoke in our house, but in the car we do. However we smoke with both the windows down. And for your information, (not recommending this for others) I smoked everyday while I was pregnant with my son. He was perfect in every way. No low birth weight, no physical deformities, and at eight months old he still hasn't been sick. Plus, he has slept through the night since he was born, so with this said...I voted no. It should be left up to the individual what they want.

I was thinking of voting no on this with the stipulation that the kids should be allowed to sue their parents at any point in their life for health issues or potential health issues. Especially since second hand smoke has been strongly linked to heart problems (as well as the typical lung issues)... ...but then I thought, with socialized medicine, maybe we should just stay preventative.

I voted no, not because I think it is alright to smoke around kids, but rather because I don't think the government should have the power to deny someone the right to smoke or not smoke in their home, let alone enforce it. Honestly, It would be scary if the government had that kind of power.

It should also be common sense not to text while driving, but there are plenty of idiots out there that do it anyway. Babies cannot tell their parents to not smoke in the car, so someone has to. While I don't like the gov't getting their fingers into too many things, a child's health and safety is worth an additional law.

I BELIEVE IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL FOR PARENTS OR ANYONE TO SMOKE IN FRONT OR AROUND OUR CHILDREN IN OR OUTSIDE THE HOME. ITS ONE THING FOR THE GOV TO WANT TO DICTATE US BUT ITS ANOTHER THING WHEN IT COMES TO OUR CHILDRENS HEALTH

First, I voted "no". The government has no right to patrol/control our right to free choice. I don't agree with smoking around my child or anyone else smoking around their own, though I do not believe it's the governments reponsiblity to parent. Especially when we are walking around in an environment filled with other toxins that no one is doing anything about.
Come on America, stop depending on the government to do your job!!!
