Grantly Dick-Read/Gamper method - A method of childbirth education named after British physician, Dick-Read, who believed that women are culturally conditioned to fear childbirth, thereby creating tension and pain during labor. Grantly Dick-Read childbirth education focuses on eliminating fear through a combination of physical awareness, breath control, and relaxation techniques. Similar techniques are named for childbirth activist Margaret Gamper.
Gestational diabetes - A condition in which abnormally high blood glucose levels appear for the first time during pregnancy.
Group B streptococcal infection - A common bacteria which may be transmitted from mother to baby at the time of the breaking of the water or delivery, resulting in a very serious infection in the newborn. A group B strep test (also known as a Beta strep test) is recommended between weeks 35 and 37 of pregnancy.
Genetic counseling - Consultation with a health care professional to discuss a couple's or individual's risk for passing on heritable diseases such as sickle cell anemia and Tay-Sachs disease; appropriate prenatal screening for genetic problems; and treatment options if genetic problems are found during prenatal testing.
