Sometimes it's nice to get advice from experts with a lot of letter degrees behind their names, but other times, you just need to hear what another parent (with a M.O.M. behind her name) has done that has worked. You've got questions? These moms have answers.

My doctor told me at least 1 milligram of folic acid per day.

You should be getting 0.4 mg of folic acid a day.  Your best bet would be to take a prenatal vitamin instead of a regular multi vitamin.  The prenatal has all the folic acid you would need in it already.  But you should discuss this with your doctor they may prescribe you a prenatal or tell you if you are in a category that needs more folic acid.

My doctor recommended I take my prenatal vitamin plus an extra folic acid (400mg) pill.  I also take an iron pill.  And a calcium pill because i know i do not drink enough milk.
