Is it safe to go through airport scanners?

I think this is an "ask your doctor" question, but plenty of women (including me) ask for a pat down instead of the scanner, just to be sure. Nobody has ever given me a hard time about it, even when I didn't look that pregnant. The only trick was keeping track of my two year old while standing perfectly still with my arms outstretched.
