Breastfeeding issues!!!!
Breastfeeding issues!!!!
My son Nolan is 7 months old, he has been breastfed since birth, and he has always had trouble latching so I have been pumping and then bottle feeding him. Lately it seems like my milk supply has gone down a lot, before I could get like 8 oz on each side, I never had any problems, but now I am only getting like 2 oz on each side. I have started him on solids so that kinda fills in the gaps but I think he still needs milk to, is there something I can to to help me produce more milk? Is it because I'm pumping? Should I start giving him formula?

I pumped for 7 months with Vivienne. At the end, I was getting 60+ ounces a day, and was getting 12+ ounces each time. I never had any supply problems. I made sure I was eating enough to support that, so an extra 1200 calories on top of my normal 1500-2000 a day. I was literally eating every 2 hours.
My suggestion is to make sure you're eating enough healthy food to support your pumping. If you are unsure of exactly how much you are eating, check out My Fitness Pal. It's an online site to track calories. It's mainly used for weight loss, but you can use it however you want. Since you're pumping, you know exactly how much milk you're making. You need 20 calories per ounce of milk. MFP can track that and add it into your daily total for you.
Don't stress yourself! You have breastfed and pumped for 7 months, thats a lot! According to the WHO babies benefit only for about 6 months from breastmilk after that it is equally healthy for them to receive breastmilk or formula. I think it is much better to relieve the stress for you and your baby than to keep on doing something that might not even be more health.
Hi,
Even at 7 months you should be able to produce enough milk to continue breastfeeding. Did you change anything in your diet? Do you drink enough? If your baby has started eating solid food, he is probably needing less milk, so your production will decrease. There is some natural products you can use like fenugreek, ask your pharmacist to tell you if you should or can take some. Beer is also good to increase the milk production... :o) The best is not to worry and try to see if there is an association that supports breast feeding mothers near where you live. Good luck!
