How to have patients for 4 year old.

I have a 4 1/2 year old son and I am a stay at home mom. Here is my problem..whenever I take him places like the zoo, pool, playground, etc. he is a good boy until we have to go home. He gets so naughty that I just don't want to take him anywhere. Are all kids this way? Will it get better? How do I find the patients for this child of mine? Please help.

What happens when you decide it's time to leave? Do you give your son a heads up that you'll be leaving in a few minutes? Or do you just pull him away from whatever he's doing? Giving kids a 5-10 minute warning gives them a chance to mentally adjust to finishing what they're doing and can help avoid tantrums.
