How long does it take to show up positive on a pregnancy test?

I have had cramping off and on since 3 or 4 days after the time I should have ovulated like I was going to start my period, so I was dreading having a horrific period. However, yesterday when I was supposed to start I didn't. I am NEVER late. I'm still cramping though like I'm going to and have all the other symptoms I was assuming was just a stronger than normal PMS (sore breasts, extremely sensitive nipples, headaches, very hungry and flu like aches). I took a test last night and it was negative. Called my OBGYN to make sure that I was safe to believe it and she said that it can take up to 3-5 days to show up if I'm positive. I thought it was supposed to be the day of the missed period? Anyone else have to wait to have a positive result?

Yes it takes a few days after your missed period. I used the First Response pregnancy test, it showed I was pregnant 3 days after my missed period.

It takes 2-3 days for the sperm to meet the egg, 2-3 days for the egg to travel down the fallopian tube, 1-2 days for the fertilized egg to implant, and another 2-3 days for the level of hcg to  build up enough in your system to get a positive result on a pregnancy test. That means it takes 7-11 days (on average).

Wait at least a few days, if not a week, before you test again. At that point, if you still get a negative result and haven't gotten your period, you should call your doctor.
