Sometimes it's nice to get advice from experts with a lot of letter degrees behind their names, but other times, you just need to hear what another parent (with a M.O.M. behind her name) has done that has worked. You've got questions? These moms have answers.

Is it too early for baby food?

My 4 month old daughter wants to try what I'm eating so bad! I only give her formula and breast milk but she leans in and kicks her little feet when I'm eating or drinking anything. My pediatrition said wait until 6 months but my cousin and friends gave their babies baby food at 4 months. I always try to follow my doctors advice but I feel like she is almost ready for food. I am trying rice cereal today but want to see if more mom's gave their babies baby food a little earlier.

Yes, wait until 6 months.

If your pediatrician tells you to wait, then you should wait. I'm sure he/she would have told if there was any discrepancy, and you could start earlier if you wanted.

I agree with listening to your pediatrician, he or she knows your child best. HOWEVER, and I am really not advocating going against doctor's advice here, if you can't manage to wait until she is six months and you start with rice cereal as you said you're going to anyway, I'm just letting you know that my daughter's pediatrician told us to start offering rice cereal at four months. We did not, however, because she really didn't seem ready, but as I said, we were given the green light on solids at four months.

my pediatrician gave me the go ahead for baby cereal at 4 months, but not jarred foods. (not sure what the difference was) I was told wait for jars until 6 months and then to start with veggies before fruit (because fruit is sweeter and once a baby tried the sweet fruits it may not be interested in the non sweet veggies)

The leaning in and being interested in what you're eating is only one of the signs that she's ready for something more than milk. Keep her involved when the family is eating (put her in high chair, give her a mealtime thing to play with--cup, spoon, etc.). She doesn't NEED the solid food yet.

It is best to wait until they are 6 months old. Children who are introduced to solids too early may develop food allergies and it is not worth the risk.http://www.mommieshelpingmommies.net

my daughter started on jar food at 8 weeks. she took rice cereal with a bottle at 5 weeks.  her doc had no problem with it. you don't need to wait until she's 6 months old, just go ahead and give it to her. you have nothing to worry about. but don't give her plain rice cereal. it tastes like wet cardboard. mix it with jar food, or put some in her bottle.
