Normally, your cervix is about 4-6cm long and it's somewhat hard and closed during pregnancy. As your body prepares for labor the cervix gets softer and shorter so that ultimately it can stretch enough to allow your baby to pass through. as you near your due date your doctor will check to see how far you're dilated and how effaced (thin) your cervix is. Dilation is measured in centimeters and effacement is measured as a percentage. If your cervix is starting to thin and you're nearing your due date it's a good thing, your body is getting ready for labor.
