if you already know your baby's gender i would say go for it. But sometimes its best to wait a little longer, only not to jinx yourself. My first pregnancy i found out it was a boy and immediately begin buying things. I had a miscarriage right after :o( even though my doctor said wait til 5 months to start shopping, i was going into my 6th month!!!
I started when I was 7 months.
I don't see a problem with you starting to buy things now. Even if you don't know the baby's gender, just buy items that are good for boys or girls. I understand wanting to wait until you know that baby's gender but somethings you can buy without knowing it.

people usually say wait until your six months cause the baby can survive outside the womb
Its ok to buy now... I have the same problem. My family is so negiative they say it will jinx the baby and miscarry. Well we can't let that fear stress us out because that is not healty for the baby. Go and buy recieving blankets, and bottles, and whatever else your heart wants. bc im am 7 weeks with my 2nd child and I bought a 3pack of bottles and 2 gender netual onies. CONGRATS
It's nevre to soon to look for baby names, I know couples who have names picked out before they even get pregnant. When to start looking for baby names is for you to decide. Take your time and have fun with chosing.
If you'll have a shower, leave some stuff up to chance to receive as gifts (and, if you earmarked money for that, it's always a good time to start a college fund!). Otherwise, all I can tell you is when my husband and I found a sleeper that said "I like to ROAR" on it, complete with little dinosaur feet, we bought it. Didn't care that we'd just gotten the positive test the week before :)
