40,000 Magnetic Toy Sets Recalled

January 18, 2007
Geometix International LLC has recalled 40,000 sets of magnetic toys, called MagneBlocks? Construction Toys. The building pieces include tiny magnets, which can fall out. If more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestinal perforation or blockage, which can be fatal.

All types of MagneBlocks? construction sets are included in the recall. The sets contain six or more plastic building pieces and six or more steel balls 1/2 an inch in diameter. Some sets also include steel rods. The pieces come in a variety of colors and shapes, including 1 1/2-inch cubes and three-, four-, and five-sided pyramids. The building pieces have "MagneBlocks?" imprinted on them. The sets were sold at discount department stores, toy stores, arts and crafts stores, and online for between $20 and $120, depending on the size of the set.

Sets purchased after November 2006 have improved warning labels and are not included in the recall.

The CPSC recommends children under 6 years of age not play with toys containing magnets. If a magnet comes loose, immediately remove the block from the set and send it to Geometrix International for a free replacement.
