My kids' winter coats are trashed. What do I buy now?

Look for transition toppers made of canvas, fleece, or a rain-resistant material. Zip-out linings, as well as a length that hits at the hip, are ideal. And a peppy color makes spring seem that much closer.

Clockwise from top: Sporty nylon windbreaker, $25; at Old Navy stores; Classic peacoat styling in a lighter-weight jacket, $34.50; crazy8.com; Mid-weight biker jacket with corduroy collar and cuffs, $68; miniboden.com; Lined coat with removable hood, $102; at Geox Shop stores in February

Quick Poll

Do you loosen your rules about how many sugary treats your kids can have during the holidays?

Totally. Have at!
