Kids Health QA: Allergy Relief

By Dr. Claire McCarthy, No Source
Q. Now that spring's here, our daughter's constantly sniffling and sneezing. How can we help her?

With allergies, the best thing to do is avoid the triggers -- but in peak season, that's basically impossible. You can lessen those triggers, though. Tips from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology:

Keep the windows closed -- at the very least, your child's bedroom windows, so she has one pollen-free zone. Consider keeping her out of the room during the day so she doesn't bring pollen in with her, only letting her back in after a nighttime bath.

Try to keep your child indoors before 10 a.m., when a lot of pollen is emitted; when you're mowing the lawn or raking leaves; and on days when the pollen count is reported as being high (check pollen.com) or it's very windy.

Don't hang sheets or clothes outside to dry, where they may gather pollen.

If that doesn't help, medications can. Claritin and Benadryl, both available over the counter, can be quite effective, though it can take Claritin a week or two to kick in. Make sure you talk to your doctor first before trying them.

Quick Poll

Do you loosen your rules about how many sugary treats your kids can have during the holidays?

Totally. Have at!
A little -- heck, we're indulging, too!
Nope. It's not healthy or worth the sugar meltdown.
