A Healthy Balance
June 30, 2005

Lesson No. 2: Balance healthy carbs, protein, and fats
What has helped stave off her hunger these many months, says Konigsberg, is the careful balance of carbs, protein, and fat in every ZoneChef meal (a chicken breast, for example, stuffed with spinach and corn, and cooked with a teaspoon or two of oil). Krieger agrees it's important to eat a healthy balance of protein, carbs, and fat, but says "there's no magic number." What's most essential, she explains, is to limit refined sugars and processed carbs, like white bread, and to focus instead on lean protein, whole grains, and fresh fruits and vegetables. To keep portions in line, your hand is a good guide (and one that will always be with you): Eat a portion of starch no bigger than your fist, a portion of meat no bigger than your palm, and a thumb-tip's worth of fat.

Next: Snack time!
