You want: Hair that doesn't stand on end when you take your hat off.
How to get it: Stop static before it starts.
* Keep hair well hydrated with a conditioner that has rich moisturizers. One we like:
Finesse Silk & Soy Protein Enriched Conditioner, $3.
* Use a brush with boar or rubber bristles instead of nylon, which attracts static. A good one to try:
Denman Natural Boar Bristle Curling Brush, $19).
* Choose silk- or cotton-knit hats over wool or acrylic ones, which create more friction, suggests Mark Garrison, owner of the Mark Garrison Salon, in New York City.
* If you do get static, rub a little hand lotion or leave-in conditioner on your hands and stroke your hair to tame it. (Use water if you have very fine hair.) Dryer sheets also calm static. Just pass one lightly across stand-up strands.
You want: Hair that looks as healthy and shiny as it does when you step out of the salon.
How to get it: Clean -- but don't strip -- your hair.
1. Shampoo every other day (unless your hair is very fine and oily), so natural oils can boost your shine. On "skip" days, wet hair and apply a little conditioner at the ends or gently massage scalp in the shower to refresh it.
2. Weekly, remove product buildup, which can dull hair, with a deep-cleansing shampoo like
Pantene Pro-V Clarifying Shampoo, $4.
3. End each shower with a cold-water rinse to help the cuticle lie flat so hair looks more lustrous.
4. Apply a shine serum (working from the ends to about halfway up the hair shaft), to concentrate it on drier ends. We like
Pavés Professional Flawless in the Spotlight Greaseless Essential Oil Shine Serum, $6.
