Pregnancy Tests: Overcoming Needle Fears

By Barbara Alden Wilson, Parenting
From blood tests to amnio, you can expect to come face to face with a needle at least five times during your pregnancy. If needles make you anxious, try these calmers:

Distract yourself. Get someone to drive you to your ob's office and keep you engaged in conversation while you wait.

Think relaxing thoughts. Close your eyes and imagine yourself at the beach or another pleasant place. Listening to soothing music or recorded environmental sounds (ocean waves, say) on a portable CD player can help you stay focused on the image.

Take deep breaths. Doing this will help you stay calm and stave off lightheadedness.

Stretch out. If you feel woozy, ask if you can lie down for the procedure. The position will help you relax as well as prevent you from fainting.
