You won't believe how easy it is to make an entire costume out of ordinary kitchen supplies! Stuff like pie tins, scouring pads, and a colander help this costume come to life.

  • Small roll canvas-backed foil insulation (available at hardware stores)
  • 2 yards silver ribbon
  • Gray nonskid drawer liner or rug pad
  • 1 yard elastic
  • Disposable pie tin
  • 12-inch pieces red and black felt
  • 4 white or metallic scouring pads
  • Black gloves
  • Large red and black feathers
  • Small metal colander
  • Cardboard wrapping-paper roll
  • 1/2 yard patterned fabric
  • Black hoodie, gray long johns, black boots
Tunic: Measure your child from shoulders to mid thigh and across his chest. Double the shoulder-to-thigh length and cut insulation to this measurement. Fold material in half widthwise and cut a slit along the fold for neck hole. Glue silver ribbon around the tunic edges. Cut drawer liner to look like chain-mail trim and glue it along tunic bottom, as shown.

Shield: Glue a piece of elastic across the inside of the pie tin to make a handle. Glue red and black felt shapes to front of pie tin.

Armor (for knees and elbows): Glue loops of elastic to each scouring pad; slide them onto legs and arms.

Gloves: Glue a piece of drawer liner, gathering every few inches, around front of each glove for gauntlets.

Helmet: Glue red and black feathers to one side of colander.

Banner: Cover wrapping-paper roll with foil insulation; glue patterned fabric along top half, as shown.

Toolbox: You'll need a hot-glue gun, glue sticks, and scissors. All materials available at crafts shops, unless noted.
