You've picked clothes in his favorite colors and the softest cotton, so why is your child still annoyed by his shirt? He might just be asserting his independence, but he could be extra sensitive. "Even a tiny buttonhole or seam can be bothersome," says Jennifer Shu, M.D., a pediatrician and coauthor of Heading Home With Your Newborn. Here's what to do:

Cut it out
Trim or pull off the tag so it doesn't touch his neck, or look for tag-free clothes with the size and care information stamped right on the garment.

Turn it around
Let him wear his shirt or socks inside out for now to avoid irritation.

Shop the fads
Pick out items imprinted with his favorites (trucks!) so he'll want to show them off.

Get help
If complaints extend to lighting (too bright), noise (too loud), or other textures, tell his doc: It may signal a sensory integration issue.
