Find the right spot
-A private nook in the attic, basement, even a closet will do. If it's simply a chair in the living room, rotate it so your back is to the room; you're turning your back on stress. And tell your family your space is off-limits!

Set the scene
-Get a cozy chair, the cushier the better.

-Treat your senses with music (via an MP3 player), soothing lighting (a candle or lamp), nice scents (try an oil ring), favorite pictures, and a soft throw or pillow.
-Add pastimes -- a good book, trashy magazine, crafts project -- stored in a pretty box so clutter can't spoil the serene vibe.
-What to skip: family photos, kids' toys, or any reminder of your usual routine.

Sit back and relax
-To mark the transition into your own little world, establish a ritual: Make a cup of tea, turn on a song you love, or pick up a book you read only while in your special chair.
-If you keep finding excuses not to take five minutes for yourself, leave something in your space that you need every day -- say, your vitamins or eyedrops.

Quick Poll

Risqué Halloween costumes are becoming more and more popular for preteens. Does this concern you?

Yes. Those costumes are way too grown up for kids.
