If you use a bike helmet, spray-paint it a day or two before.
2 black pipe cleaners
Two 1½-inch red pom-poms
Bike helmet, spray-painted black, or black headband
½ yard red felt
9 x 12-inch rectangle of black felt
2 yards 16-gauge wire
1 yard black netting
2 small rubber bands
Black leotard and tights
Head:
Curl pipe cleaners around a pencil; glue a pom-pom to each pipe cleaner. Glue into holes in helmet or glue ends around headband.
Wings:
1. Cut out five 13-inch-long semicircles of red felt. Cut out two 11-inch-long semicircles of batting. Sandwich a batting semicircle between 2 red semicircles; glue around edges. Repeat. Cut out spots of black felt and glue onto red wings.
2. Cut two 18-inch pieces of wire; form each into a loop and tape ends. Cut unfolded netting in half. Lay 1 wire loop on a piece of netting. Gather material at top and secure with a rubber band. Repeat with other loop.
3. Overlap top edges of red wings, with bottom edgesspread, as shown in photo. Glue top edges together. Glue net wings to underside of red wings; they should overlap and cover space between red wings (they'll extend below bottom edge). Glue last red semicircle to underside of wings, across top, to cover unfinished edges. Glue wings to back neckline of leotard.
