Dealing With Diaper Drama

There you are, absentmindedly changing your baby boy's diaper, when, to your surprise, you're greeted by what looks like an erection. If you're like me, this is something you really didn't want to deal with for another fourteen years  -- or ever.

The good news is that you still don't have to think about it. Baby boys get erections for no discernible reason, and  -- though not as obvious  -- baby girls also experience spontaneous genital arousal. These occurrences don't mean anything. Your baby may get aroused from the sensation of the diaper rubbing against him, but you shouldn't worry.

In fact, at some point during infancy, most babies discover that touching their genitals feels much better than touching their toes or tummy. Babies may find ways to rub their genitals (such as by rocking or bouncing) before falling asleep because they find the sensation soothing.

Whether during diaper changes or bedtime, there's no reason to stop your baby from touching himself, particularly if it's relaxing for him. This behavior is temporary, and it will eventually pass.
