Eco-Friendlier Chain Stores

Earth-conscious shoppers can head to these retailers

By Leah Konen

Wal-Mart
You can't take plastic bags to many recycling centers, but you can bring yours here (so far, they've recycled 1,400 tons of plastic).

Target
Besides using energy-efficient lighting in stores, the company also donates unsold food to America's Second Harvest. You can donate there, too: Go to secondharvest.org for info.

Kohl's
It ranks second in the country for green energy use by a retailer, behind Whole Foods. Kohl's stores get a fifth of their energy from natural and renewable plant and animal sources.
