How to Start Journaling

By Kamala Nair

A journal isn't just for lovesick tweens  -- it's one of the few spaces a busy mom can truly call her own. Easy ways to get started:

Make it pretty. Find an appealing blank book so you'll want to keep picking it up. (Try katespaperie.com or paper-source.com.

Take it to go. No time to write at home? Keep it in the glove compartment so you can scribble while you wait at preschool pickup.

Get inspired. Try these thought triggers:
• Ask questions. What's been my greatest joy or frustration this week? If I could have one wish, what would it be?
• Go with the flow. Try free writing. Describe any object in the room: its texture, color, and so on. See where it takes you.
• Make lists. You needn't be profound. Why not keep a log of books you've been meaning to read, or movies you'd like to see?
