Just-Enough Makeup

The Challenge: "I'd like to learn how to put on makeup so that I don't look like a clown!" says Brennan.

The Solution: Skip the brushes.

1. Smooth on moisturizer with a sponge, then use the same sponge to apply foundation; you get a lighter "veil" of color that way, says makeup artist [XREF "1154758_4" "Sara Johnson"].

2. Apply everything else by hand  -- "finger painting' is quick and controllable," explains Johnson  -- and opt for cream-based products. Using her ring finger, Johnson played up Brennan's eyes with three shades of cream shadow (finished off with a rust-colored pencil along the top lid and black mascara). For Brennan's cheeks, Johnson chose a rosy cream blush: Apply with one finger, then use a clean finger to blend and bring down the color. Last she used a reddish-brown lip color (Nars Lip Lacquer in Medea), also applied with a finger.
