Little Baby, Big Kisses

By Nicole Caccavo Kear

There's nothing more delightful than your baby's coos, gummy grin  -- and that first messy kiss.

You'll probably be treated to it when your baby's around 9 months. That's when she'll have the social savvy and motor skills to kiss (though you might get a happy slobber before then, as she explores your face with her mouth!).

At first, kissing is just an imitative game, like patty-cake and peekaboo. But around her first birthday, your baby will start to grasp that kisses are a way to be playful and affectionate. Until then, don't expect her to be able to pucker very well, or for her kisses to land all that close to your mouth!

The laughter and applause she gets will be all the incentive she needs to keep the kisses coming.
