Medicine Kit Must-Haves

Keep your travel and home medicine kits stocked with these tools

Who wants to get stuck looking for a drugstore at 3 a.m. on vacation? Along with the swim goggles and lovey, don't leave home without this gear, says Takoma, MD, pediatrician Lavanya Sithanandam, M.D.:

  1. Medications your child needs for preexisting conditions (such as an inhaler or EpiPen)

  2. Fever reducer/pain reliever, like acetaminophen o ibuprofen (over 6 months)

  3. Antibacterial cream, such as Neosporin (to prevent boo-boos from becoming infected)

  4. Antihistamine, such as children's Benadryl or Claritin (for possible allergic reactions)

  5. Thermometer

  6. Oral rehydration solution, such as Pedialyte (get the powder form for easy packing)

  7. Bandages

  8. Nasal aspirator and saline spray (if you've got a baby prone to stuffy noses)

  9. Hand sanitizer

  10. Sunblock

  11. 1% hydrocortisone cream (to reduce itching and irritation after insect bites or rashes)

  12. Insect repellent with a DEET concentration of 30 percent

  13. Tweezers (for tick or splinter removal)
