Robert L. Manuel, PhD is dean of the School of Continuing Studies (SCS) at Georgetown University. He has more than 20 years in higher education experience in specific areas such as admissions, technology development, events, financial aid, developing and implementing academic programs including graduate and online learning strategies at New York University and Georgetown University.
Manuel's emphasis on targeted outreach has resulted in growth in the School's programs. Since joining the SCS community in 2006, he has redeveloped the University's only part-time bachelor's degree program as well as introduced five new master's degree programs. Specifically, in the past 5 years, the School has grown to offer 15 degree programs, including the first doctoral degree program in Liberal Studies in the United States and Canada, to manage the University's professional, summer, and continuing education programs, and to offer more than 600 non-credit courses. As a result, many of the student programs have seen student enrollment multiply several fold.
Recognizing the importance and value of integrating a global, international perspective into SCS programming, while at Georgetown, Manuel has increased the School's international partnerships and presence. He developed the Georgetown Global Education Institute (GGEI) beginning with a partnership with China. GGEI educates global leaders in the areas of innovation, creativity, entrepreneurship, urban planning, and financial policy. Manuel is currently working to expand GGEI into India, Africa, and Brazil. In addition, through Manuel's leadership, Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia recently signed a cooperative agreement with former President of Mexico, Vicente Fox, in order to create educational programming for chief cultural officers and human resources professionals through the SCS Master of Professional Studies in Human Resources Management.
Before arriving at Georgetown, Manuel served as assistant dean and clinical associate professor at New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies. In this capacity, he was responsible for administering several master's, bachelor's, and associate degree programs as well as managing online certificate programs. At New York University, Manuel increased the online student retention rate, decreased non-credit course cancellations, and created industry partnerships that resulted in innovative programs for the school.
He is a member of the Dean's Council at Georgetown University and the University Campaign Council. Since 2008, he has served on the board of directors for The University Continuing Education Association. Also, Manuel serves on the editorial advisory board for Continuing Higher Education Review and is a former University Continuing Education Association commissioner. In addition, Manuel is a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and a board member of the American Council on Education.
Manuel earned a Bachelor of Science degree in history and political science from Allegheny College, a Master of Science degree from Syracuse University, and a PhD from New York University. He resides in Rockville, Maryland with his wife and three children.
