Robert Needlman, M.D., is co-founder of the nonprofit organization Reach Out and Read, which prepares America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. He is the author of "Dr. Spock's Baby Basics" and co-author of the eighth edition of "Baby and Child Care," Dr. Benjamin Spock's classic parenting manual. Needlman has written for parents online at DrSpock.com and as a Yahoo health expert. His published academic work includes studies on pediatric literacy promotion, the effects of prenatal cocaine exposure, iron deficiency, maternal depression, and resident training. A graduate of Yale College (English Literature) and the Yale School of Medicine, Needlman practices and teaches Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland and is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
