Must Read Moms: This Woman's Work

After Dawn Friedman's daughter came into her life, her blog became a forum for how open adoption plays out in families.

This Woman's Work

Made cookies with my 6-year-old, Madison, the other day. Mixing is her favorite activity, so she was pleased when I asked her to sift the cocoa powder and flour into our big stainless-steel bowl.

"It's a good thing you came and got me," she said. "I really know how to cook! Know why? I have a birth mama who is a professional chef and I practice with you at home!"

We've had regular visits with Madison's birth mom, Pennie, since before Maddie was born. She is as much a part of our lives as the grandparents are. People used to worry that the idea of having two mommies would confuse Madison, but she got the hang of it by the time she was 2 years old.

"You're right!" I told her. "You've gotten really good!" I tell you, that kid is pretty smart. But then she's got a couple of smart mamas.
