Prenatal complications don't have to haunt you later in life. Gestational diabetes increases your risk for developing type 2 diabetes as much as 50 percent, and you're more apt to have a stroke. Preeclampsia can result in chronic hypertension, hardening of the arteries, and stroke as well. Excess weight gain puts you at risk for obesity if you fail to lose the weight postpartum.
Stay-well strategies for all three: Drop excess pounds with a sensible diet (losing a pound a week) and regular exercise.
