Solutions for Milk Haters

By Meghan Rabbit

Your child's not a big milk drinker (or you're not one yourself)? Easy ways to sneak it in, from dietitian Janice Newell Bissex, coauthor of The Mom's Guide to Meal Makeovers:

  • Prepare oatmeal and powdered hot chocolate with milk instead of water.

  • hen heating up a can of cream-based soup, substitute milk for water.

  • Look for instant mac and cheese that calls for added milk. Or make your own.

  • Skip OJ in the morning and whip up smoothies. An easy recipe: Combine 1 cup low-fat milk, 1/2 cup yogurt, 1/2 banana, 1/2 cup frozen strawberries, and 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract in a blender and whip until smooth.

  • Have a milk shake instead of ice cream for dessert. Or have an "ice-cream smooshie," an idea from Terry Roth, a mom in New Freedom, PA: In a cup, mash together a scoop of ice cream and some milk, and serve with a spoon. "The ice cream makes the milk sweet, and they gulp it down," she says.
