In the wake of the 2009 Butte plane crash that killed 14 passengers, including seven children, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has renewed their efforts to put an end to “lap child” policies.Read Full Post

Just when my eyes had dried from watching videos of soldiers returning home, I hear one of the most touching stories ever and BAM -- I’m a big, weepy mess all over again.

For Shirley Sirivong, being pregnant has been anything but easy. After being diagnosed with gestational diabetes, complete placenta previa, and incompetent cervix, she was put on bed rest and a strict special diet. In the early months of bed rest, Shirley’s “dull” breakfasts were limited to egg whites, wheat bread, peanut butter, and a few fruits and veggies. To liven up Shirley’s bland meals, her husband Gat began to create funny faces out of boiled eggs and toast. “After a few days of that,” Shirley told us, “they started to become more elaborate scenes.”

For the parents of a child who thinks being Facebook “friends” with Mom and Dad is “like, SO awkward,” there’s another way to keep tabs on her online comments, photos, and status updates.

Yesterday, AOL launched SafeSocial, a paid-monthly service that allows parents to monitor their child’s online interactions on social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter -- without having to be a “friend.”

Lately, flight attendants have been serving up more drama than daytime TV. People are still talking about JetBlue attendant Steven Slater’s now-famous in-flight freak-out and emergency slide ride. This week’s flight attendant headline, however, involves a much more sobering plane encounter:

A Southwest Airlines flight attendant took a 13-month-old girl away from her parents after the mother slapped the child during a flight, CNN reports. The flight attendant and witnesses told police the parents exchanged heated words over how to quiet the crying child before the mother slapped the child in the face. The attendant decided to intervene and brought the child to the back of the plane to calm her down.

What ever happened to good ol’ ballet class?

This weekend, The Stir blogged about Tantra Fitness, a workout studio based in Canada that currently offers pole dancing classes and private lessons…to kids. As young as 5 years old.

"Kids love the pole,” studio owner Tammy Morris told the Ottawa Citizen. “If anything, it's hard to get them off it because they're such naturals." Morris says the focus of their pole dance instruction is fitness and technique, not stripping.

There’s no need to feel guilty about being a working mom -- your little one will be just fine.

A study led by Columbia University School of Social Work recently concluded that infants of working mothers are no worse off than babies of stay-at-home moms, overturning years of previous studies claiming the contrary.

According to the new findings, although infants raised by mothers with full-time jobs scored somewhat lower on cognitive tests, the negative effects were offset by the advantages, the Washington Post reports. Employed mothers have higher incomes, and their children are more likely to receive high-quality childcare. Surprisingly, they were also more likely to display “maternal sensitivity,” or responsiveness toward their children.

While this is definitely encouraging news, working moms may want to hold off on that collective sigh of relief: re-entering the work force after taking time off to raise a family poses its own set of challenges.

For most parents, they are the worst things a kid can bring home from school: lice. Those pesky, panic-inducing insects that seem to set up camp in your kids' hair at least once in their academic career.

According to the Mayo Clinic, head lice are a very common problem, second only to the common cold among communicable diseases affecting schoolchildren -- which is why some parents are still scratching their heads (pun intended) over a new report from The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

According to the report, a case of head lice is no reason for a child to miss school. In addition, the AAP recommends that schools abandon "no-nits" policies, which require that children be nit-free (nits are the small, dandruff-like empty egg casings lice leave behind once they've hatched) before returning to class.

We’re all too familiar with Hollywood’s obsession with youth -- we’re used to seeing brows lifted, lips plumped, and lines smoothed out as aging actresses attempt to delay the inevitable. But all of those frozen faces couldn’t prepare me for this:

Eighteen-year-old singer Charice Pempengco recently revealed that she underwent Botox and a skin-tightening Thermage procedure for her upcoming role on Glee. Why?? "To look fresh on camera," she told reporters at a press event, according to the Associated Press. Charice received treatment in her native country of the Philippines to alter the shape of her “naturally round face,” People magazine reports.

Sure, she’s no Suri. While the littlest Cruise sashays in frilly dresses, designer handbags and sparkly heels (heels!!), Shiloh Jolie-Pitt prefers sporting boys’ neck ties, jackets and a cropped ’do.

In March, Life & Style Weekly ran a cover story which accused Angelina Jolie of turning daughter Shiloh into a boy. Since then, the fashion choices of a FOUR-YEAR OLD continue to spark controversy and make headlines.
