Remember Shirley and Gat Sirivong, the adorable food art couple? In September, we shared the sweet story of Gat and the elaborate breakfast scenes he created for his pregnant, bedridden wife using eggs, toast, peanut butter, and some veggies. (Reader fave: “ Angry Birds.”)

Diagnosed with gestational diabetes, complete placenta previa, and an incompetent cervix, Shirley was on bed rest for six months, 14 weeks of which were spent in the hospital. (The couple even celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary at the hospital.)

We are thrilled to announce that Shirley and Gat welcomed son Cody on December 2nd! He was born at 37 weeks, weighing in at a healthy 6 pounds, 2 ounces.

The sorry state of school lunches has been a hot topic this year, even making primetime TV with Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.

Now processed school meals are getting a healthy makeover thanks to a new bill signed by President Obama today. In hopes of curbing childhood obesity and improving the nutritional content of school lunches, The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 gives the government more authority to regulate nutritional standards for all food sold in schools, including cafeteria meals and vending machine options.

Ever heard that lifting weights is harmful to children? Researchers are now reporting that weight training can actually be highly beneficial for a child’s development.  

After reviewing decades worth of studies on children and weightlifting, German researchers have concluded that, contrary to popular belief, children can increase muscular strength by lifting weights. Other benefits: weight training can help reduce their risk of injury and improve brain-muscle interaction.
