Adele Gives Birth, Web Trolls Attack

Giving birth to a first child is a hugely personal and deeply emotional milestone in a woman's life. 

When you're a celebrity, though, there is no such thing as privacy. And if you're Adele, there's no hiding from the trolls. 

As quick as fans were to congratulate the singer, haters were on hand to lob slurs – and worse. 

Vanessa Bieber (@PerFemale) tweeted: "Aw, Adele gave birth to a baby :) is it fat and handicapped lol just murder it already lol." 

This is, of course, a two day old infant she's talking about. (Bieber deleted her tweet and her account appears to have been suspended, but unfortunately for her, the internet never forgets.) 

According to the Daily Mail, another Twitter user wrote, horrifyingly: 'I’ll go see her in the UK and kill her', while another retweeted the message, adding: 'And kill her baby.'

Perhaps even more depressingly, the trolling wasn't limited to nameless losers. 

Never one to miss an opportunity for an easy jab, comedienne Joan Rivers got in on the act.

Of course Rivers wasn't alone in making a lazy joke at Adele's expense. There was no shortage of variations on the "I didn't know she was pregnant; I thought she was fat" variety.

So Adele was pregnant all along, I thought she was just...fat.

Twitter has declined to intervene on the singer's behalf, citing a policy of not comment on individual users.

The 24-year-old Grammy winner – notoriously outspoken about her her weight and past struggles with depression – announced she was pregnant in June with her charity worker partner Simon Knoecki.
