Q&A with Maternity Fashion Designer Liz Lange

We caught up with designer Liz Lange at the tenth anniversary of Liz Lange Maternity for Target. The style maven, and mom of two, gave us some fashion tips for mamas-to-be who want to rock their maternity clothes.

How do you balance career and motherhood? I don’t balance it. That’s why it’s so delicate. It’s a constant juggling act. Things go wrong all the time, but I just try to go with the flow. It’s not easy and I really admire the women out there that are doing it without any help. I have help at the office, I have help at home, and that’s the secret to my success.

What is your number one style suggestion for a woman who is expecting? You must keep it fitted. Do not wear those oversized muumuus. Don’t try to hide your body. Celebrate your body. Wear things that are fitted. You will look sexy and thinner—ironically so!

What is the biggest fashion mistake that new moms make? Expecting moms are always trying to hide their pregnancy. They think if they wear something oversized it’s going to make them look skinner and it’s going to hide their pregnancy, but it is quite the opposite.

Would you ever design clothing for children? I have before and I love it. Right now, I’ve got a new women's collection for the Home Shopping Network, so I am pretty focused on that. And on my clothing line. And on my new diaper bag line for Target!

Your daughter is eleven now.  What sort of things does she like to wear? She is very trendy. She likes skinny jeans and layered crop tops with those skinny, longer tanks under them, maxi dresses, and short-short skirts. She's an aspiring fashion designer.

How has the Liz Lange line evolved since you became a mother? I wasn’t a mother when I started, but I got pregnant within my first year. In the beginning, I started with like eight easy pieces, and I thought that’s all you needed. Then I got pregnant and every time I needed something, I designed it. I needed a bathing suit, I needed a dressy dress, I needed a pair of shorts, and it just grew from there.
