Q&A with Rosie Pope

Maternity clothing designer, star of Bravo's Pregnant in Heels, and mom-of-three Rosie Pope chatted with us about how she balances kids and work.
What's the best piece of advice you have for moms balancing work and kids?
It’s a really hard thing to do, but you have to be in the moment. For me, I’m running all over the place all the time, so I had to learn that when I’m with my kids I have to be totally present in that moment. It’s more about quality of time than quantity of time. It takes practice to be able to turn off your brain and not think about work when you’re with your kids and vice versa, but it’s essential to the success of making both things work.
Are there any products you would recommend to a mom juggling work and a newborn?
That’s one of the reasons I paired with Philips Avent. I am constantly on the run with my 5 week old, and whether I’m on live TV or I’m filming I need to bottle feed. Having a bottle that’s most like my breast has really made the world of difference for me.
What is the rudest thing someone said to you while you were pregnant?
I could say so many things, but people always asked me if I was pregnant with twins. Not that that would be a bad thing, but it basically implies that I look huge.
What's the last thing your child did that cracked you up?
My middle son is 16 months old and he wants so much to be like his older brother. My older son likes to sword fight, so my middle son treats his toothbrush like a sword and whenever we brush his teeth he makes swooshing sounds and tries to jab me with it!
On your show, you get some pretty crazy requests from clients. Did you ever request anything crazy while you were pregnant?
On set, there was always a box full of snacks, and after I got pregnant, I got hooked on chocolate and peanut butter covered pretzels, so I would make them refill it everyday.
What's the best family vacation you've taken so far?
It's not very exotic but we love to go to my in-laws' place on the Jersey Shore. For us it’s the perfect place to go; it’s a total tranquil escape. My kids love the rides on the boardwalk, which is the perfect place for younger kids. For us, its so much better than any five-star resort. If you’re lucky you might even see Snooki!
What is your favorite piece from your maternity line, and why?
I love my dresses that go from desk to dinner, which is indicative of the way my life is. My favorite dress is the “India” dress—it is loose and easy fitting so you don’t have to worry about being self conscious. To dress it up I recommend adding a belt.
Briefly describe your parenting style:
I am incredibly easy-going and open-minded when it comes to doing crazy things, like playing golf in the middle of our apartment. However, I’m incredibly strict when it comes to scheduling and bedtime and manners. I definitely walk the line of those things. I think playtime and fun are incredibly important, but structure is equally important.
