At a time when he should have been celebrating new beginnings, Parenthood actor Dax Shepard was helping his father prepare for the end. Just when Shepard and his wife Kristen Bell learned they were expecting their first child, Shepard’s father was diagnosed with cancer.
“Whoever was writing my life couldn’t figure out which storyline they wanted to tell, and decided to tell them all at once,” Shepard wrote Wednesday in his honest and tear-inducing blog post.
Shepard admits that growing up he had a rocky relationship with his father, who was a proud, 25-year member of Alcoholics Anonymous, but in his final months, this father and son duo worked out their differences and became closer than ever.
“We never built a tree house or a soap box derby car together, but you would have never known it by watching us tear through chemo decisions and radiation plans,” Shepard wrote.
Shepard’s pregnant wife Kristen Bell gave her father-in-law one last surprise, showing up unexpectedly at the hospital, where a poignant moment was caught on film.
“She lifted her shirt up and he put his hand on her swollen stomach. He left it there for the better part of an hour,” wrote Shepard. “He was smiling from ear to ear, sitting contently, unable to put together a sentence, but still capable of connecting to the new family member we were creating. If I live to be a thousand, I will still be in debt to my wife for giving him that one last thrill,” wrote Shepard.
