If you’re like most moms of girls, your thrill at her going back to school is tempered by the ordeal of clothes shopping. You’ll be dragging her from store to store, trying to find just the right things to suit her personality, fit your budget, and—horrors—that aren’t going to be seen all over town. Apparently lots of moms shopped at the same local chain store that was having the big sale that we did…as evidenced by not one but two girls in my daughter's class showing up in “her” outfit on the first day of school last year. It was a long night. Read Full Post

I am really annoyed, and I don’t know whether I have a right, or whether I’m over-thinking. At my daughter’s school they are running a program this week called Jump Rope for Heart. The American Heart Association distributes a packet through the school, which includes a pledge sheet and leaflets detailing the prizes the kids can win for bringing in different amounts of money. They earn this money by signing up sponsors, who pledge a certain amount for each jump the child makes in a jump-rumping competition in gym class. Read Full Post

My sixth grader, Aden, refuses to wear a coat, never mind hat or gloves. We live on Long Island, where we have had a particularly long string of cold, snowy, icy weather. Yet day after day, he leaves for school wearing a sweat jacket. Of course, he owns a winter coat. Two in fact. But there he is, shivering, at the bus stop (I can see from my window). Read Full Post

I'm never been enamored of those little plastic toys that come with my kids' lunch. When they were really little, they never even made it out of McDonald's. I'd secretly stuff them in the trash as we left, and they never noticed. Now, at 7 and 11, they do notice, and in fact collect them. I find them littered all over the car, the bathroom...I've even stepped on them in bare feet in the middle of the night...which hurts, though you probably know that. But the idea of banning the iconic Happy Meal makes even me a little melancholy. Yet it appears that what actually happened today in San Francisco. Read Full Post

We’re up against it now. My 11-year-old son, Aden, just started junior high last week. And like kids of all ages these days, he had a summer reading project to do. Two of them, actually. Oh, and a 22-page double-sided math packet.
Moms my age (and younger, I’m sure) will recall summers that were spent....summering. Doing not much of anything and really enjoying it. No more. First it was summer reading. Ok, they can read a book over the summer. Then it became two books, and this summer, they added this math packet, fully half of which is above my head, to say nothing of his. Read Full Post

When it comes to buying a car seat, it all boils down to one factor: safety, of course. And choosing a car seat can be one of the more confusing kid-related purchases you make, second only to, maybe, a stroller. For both those reasons, moms tend to fall back on the big names. Read Full Post

My daughter, Amelia, like so many other kids, is allergic to peanuts. I’ve been fearful and frustrated in the three years since we found out, but I’ve had one consolation: she didn’t seem fazed at all. She never complained when she couldn’t eat the birthday cake -- a few Oreos or Chips Ahoy were fine, too. Read Full Post

My 6-year-old daughter is watching me. And sometimes, it turns out, that’s not the worst thing.
Like many other moms, I’m sure, the idea of having a daughter was thrilling -- the clothes! The dance recitals! The quiet, neat playdates! The clothes! -- but also unsettling. Some little woman-to-be was going to be using me as a model for what to do (or, more likely, what not to do). Gulp. Read Full Post
