If you’re like most moms of girls, your thrill at her going back to school is tempered by the ordeal of clothes shopping. You’ll be dragging her from store to store, trying to find just the right things to suit her personality, fit your budget, and—horrors—that aren’t going to be seen all over town. Apparently lots of moms shopped at the same local chain store that was having the big sale that we did…as evidenced by not one but two girls in my daughter's class showing up in “her” outfit on the first day of school last year. I am really annoyed, and I don’t know whether I have a right, or whether I’m over-thinking. At my daughter’s school they are running a program this week called Jump Rope for Heart. The American Heart Association distributes a packet through the school, which includes a pledge sheet and leaflets detailing the prizes the kids can win for bringing in different amounts of money. They earn this money by signing up sponsors, who pledge a certain amount for each jump the child makes in a jump-rumping competition in gym class.Read Full Post

My sixth grader, Aden, refuses to wear a coat, never mind hat or gloves. We live on Long Island, where we have had a particularly long string of cold, snowy, icy weather. Yet day after day, he leaves for school wearing a sweat jacket. Of course, he owns a winter coat. Two in fact. But there he is, shivering, at the bus stop (I can see from my window).Read Full Post
