My friend Ellen writes an awesome blog called MomoMom. I met Ellen when she was single, pregnant and living in NYC. She Facebooked-friended me (you can too!) and thanked me for writing the Storked! blog on glamour.com and my book Rattled! Of course, I blushed, felt humbled, but then started following her Facebook statuses. She is from Kansas. Was a hardcore Black Swan-type ballerina in training at one time. Held down loving relationships, then like me, while living in downtown NYC, partied, dated—got pregnant and the guy took off. Yep.Read Full Post

Mornings are so fun. Here’s how ours went down today:
1. JD woke up at 4 AM asking for milk and “little cookies.” He was referring to Cookie Crisp cereal (made with whole grain which all good in my mom book).
2. Took a two-minute shower, only to be interrupted mid-face scrub (like soap in eyes) by JD: “Maaaaa, I need a tattoo on my hand or I can’t even go to school today. OK?”

I have a hard time justifying me-time these days. Take today: I worked a freelance job at a magazine office and my mom watched JD because he doesn't attend school on Tuesdays. I left my condo at 7:15 AM and didn’t return until 7 PM. But, I didn’t work until 7 or even 6. I did something for me before going home—well, sorta. See…Read Full Post

I've blogged before that JD refuses to take medicine. I know what you’re all thinking: How does a four-year-old overpower his grown mother, actually win the fight and not ingest medication when he is ill??? I DON’T KNOW. All I can peg it to is he doesn’t like the flavor, because my son, other than the occasional meltdown, nonstop energy is a normal kid. He aced his recent well checkup and the parent-teacher conferences always go well.Read Full Post

As a single mom, I have to be honest and say that I don’t think my parents act or do anything extraordinarily different than typical, involved grandparents. But I recently got into a tiff with my Dad and here’s why.Read Full Post

The other morning JD and I were being lazy in my bed. It was early, so I didn’t even have the television on. My eyes were closed and JD said in the sweetest voice: “What does our dad look like? Can we drive there?” My stomach sunk and my eyes popped open. I turned to my go-to absent dad line: “Bud, you live here with mom and everyone has a different type of family"—then I turned on the television and Barney took it from there.Read Full Post

Grey’s Anatomy premiered a new season on Thursday. Did you tune in? I did! There’s a lot of drama going on and I am going to blog about something Meredith said to Christina (this is your spoiler warning). It made me kind of pissed—especially because, well, Mer is sort of a single mom now. If you recall the season ended with her and baby Z alone in the house. McDreamy was MIA and mad, because she screwed with his study and as a result, she was fired from her job at Seattle Grace Hospital in the first half of the season premiere.Read Full Post

I was reading an interesting article on Babble.com the other day about single moms who live with other single moms. I immediately forwarded the link to my single mom friend, Mareesa. Her son Crissy and JD are the same age and best buds. I wrote: “Wanna be roomies? LOL.
Here’s the thing, I get it. And the idea of living with another adult, even a single mom, is alluring. I would love the company in the evening, instead of working in a dim office or watching television alone in my bed. Instead of unraveling alone in my bed, worrying about work, money, JD’s college fund, the fact that I’m approaching 31 and single. The fact JD’s dad is oblivious the reality unfolding in NJ. Being able to hash all this out with someone, instead of letting my brain race and fry would be awesome. I tend to think a lot at night.

JD is growing like a weed. He is currently 35 pounds and 41 inches tall. Nothing fits him. So after a shopping spree at TJ Maxx, Target and Old Navy he’s set with jeans, army fatigue cargoes (two hues), khaki pants, corduroys (navy and tan), sweats, long-sleeve rugby shirts, tees, preppy button downs and a cool army fatigue hoody with a fuzzy fleece lining I found at Walmart when I stopped in to buy K-Cups. Yes, JD was with me on our shopping excursions and yes, he had his opinions (he's my kid). I let him pick out a Buzz Light Year long-sleeve tee, an orange polo with yellow stripes and even a pair of Woody jammies. So, yes I let him pick out his clothes sometimes, but sometimes I say no. I recently blogged that a local shoe boutique we shop at sent a sizing reminder via a postcard addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Coppa. We stopped in over the weekend, even though JD seemed to have room in size 11 Nikes I bought for him over the summer. They were a little grubby and we’re shoe people, so what the heck.Read Full Post

What a fun night and morning I had. At 2 AM, JD woke up calling for me, “Mom, I’m so chilly!” I sleepily walked into his room to find all his covers on the floor. JD moonlights as an Olympic tumbler in his sleep. I shut his window. At 4 AM he pranced into my room giggling, with his blue blanket trailing behind him and said, “Can I have some milk and watch cartoons?” I unknowingly said, yes, because I was half-dreaming. When I realized what time it was, I changed my mind. You can imagine how that went over. JD got milk. I put on channel 123 and fake-slept until 5:45 when my alarm clock went off. JD was sleeping and a turtle was whining on the television.Read Full Post
