She flies through the air with the greatest of ease, that Daring Young Mom on her flying trapeze. At least she tries to make it look easy. Kathryn Thompson has been a daring young mom since she gave birth to her first child at age 24. She’s since added two more to the family circus and although she’s several years older, she still claims the title of “Young Mom” with pride. After completing a bachelors degree in Film and English and a working for a couple of years as a librarian, she's joined the ranks of women who are loving their new careers as stay-at-home moms and reaching out to each other for support and friendship.

DYM has spent a good portion of her life saying, "Go tell Mom," or "Mom can fix it." Now she is the mom. That's quite a lot of responsibility for someone who still feels like a kid on the inside.

DYM lives in the Seattle area with her computer-genius husband and three smallish people who want her to stop typing, feed them marshmallows, and play Candy Land all day, fictitiously named Laylee (born ’03), Magoo (born ’05), and Wanda (born ’09).

Taking a toddler for a ride on an airplane is a lot like making her wait in a gray room for an hour before strapping her down with a belt to a fast moving object, that makes her ears feel funny, that’s full of mad people who want complete silence for two hours. It’s a whole lot like that. Throw in the fact that if the toddler moves around enough to jostle the seat in front of her, she will enrage the person sitting in that seat and it makes for a whole lot of good times.

It’s time for my yearly parenting resolution. Of course there are fifty things I could and should make resolutions about but I try to stick to one per year in order to keep myself from feeling like a complete and utter failure. I have resolution ADD and can barely keep my brain focused on one goal, let alone fifty.

My dad works for Santa. He’s a helper at a mall in California and with this job come a whole lot of great stories and connections to other Santa-ish people across the United States. Because of these connections, last week I found myself driving several towns over to go to a mall an hour from my house in order to see a specific Santa who’s part of my dad’s posse. We no longer visit random Santas. We know them by their first names. We follow their chatter on Facebook.Read Full Post

My kids fight more in December. It’s the one month our family focuses most heavily on love, giving, and the life of Jesus Christ so you’d think with all the lights, the magic, and the wonder, they’d be so happy that a naturally outpouring of love and kindness would overcome them. But I’ve often observed an outpouring of something less pleasant and it makes me tired all over. When did Christmas become more about what material items we will get and less about what we can give of ourselves?

I got to spend some quality time with our pediatrician today and he asked all the standard health questions. He even asked some in-depth questions about my kids’ hygiene, sleeping arrangements and risk factors for germ transmission. At one point, I laughed and said, “No, they don’t share a bed but Wanda likes to stick as many different toothbrushes in her mouth as she can.”

Right now the play’s the only thing. Laylee’s in a community theatre production of A Christmas Story, not THE Christmas Story starring Baby Jesus, but A Christmas Story starring Ralphie, the boy who might shoot his eye out.

Lately I’ve been feeling really grateful. Everywhere I turn, there’s something to make me realize how lucky I am to be a mom, to be a wife and to live in a beautiful little town in a gorgeous free country. I’m blessed. Here are a few things I’m thankful for this year.

Somewhere along the way Laylee has decided that I don’t know anything about math or science. Is it because I don’t work as a software engineer every day? Because I clean toilets? It better not be because I’m a woman.Read Full Post

Today when the image came to my mind of God standing on my doorstep and turning my kids over to me for an 18-year babysitting gig, it really made me question much of what I do as a parent.
