She flies through the air with the greatest of ease, that Daring Young Mom on her flying trapeze. At least she tries to make it look easy. Kathryn Thompson has been a daring young mom since she gave birth to her first child at age 24. She’s since added two more to the family circus and although she’s several years older, she still claims the title of “Young Mom” with pride. After completing a bachelors degree in Film and English and a working for a couple of years as a librarian, she's joined the ranks of women who are loving their new careers as stay-at-home moms and reaching out to each other for support and friendship.

DYM has spent a good portion of her life saying, "Go tell Mom," or "Mom can fix it." Now she is the mom. That's quite a lot of responsibility for someone who still feels like a kid on the inside.

DYM lives in the Seattle area with her computer-genius husband and three smallish people who want her to stop typing, feed them marshmallows, and play Candy Land all day, fictitiously named Laylee (born ’03), Magoo (born ’05), and Wanda (born ’09).

By kid number three, I’ve learned that not all milestones should be pushed and there are even some that I’d rather bury underground and hope my kids never know they exist.

The Moving to a Big Kid Bed milestone should be, at the very least, covered in broccoli and when the kid’s old enough to eat it all without complaining, if she happens to notice the milestone underneath, she can have it.

A few nights ago Dan and I were tired and Wanda was crying for a shnuli (binkie) so I turned to Magoo and said, “Six points if you run upstairs and find Wanda's dragon shnuli.” He stopped, his little six-year-old ears perking up.

Sometimes I suck all the fun out of Laylee’s world, not allowing her to sign up for every single club at school, telling her to stop reading and get some sleep, or slowing her insatiable candy intake. I tell her that it’s my motherly duty to save her from herself. Sometimes I wonder who will save me.Read Full Post

By the age of four, Laylee was a total perfectionist, prone to hysterics over each little error and crippled by her desire to do everything exactly right. My experience with Laylee is what drew me to The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes, a wonderful new picture book by Mark Pett and Gary Rubinstein, two former Teach For America teachers who noticed the crippling power of perfectionism in the lives of their students.

I’m scared of bad guys breaking into my house at night. I’m terrified of rodents. There is no word in the English language to describe how very afraid I am of lice and bedbugs. No word.Read Full Post

You have a one-inch square localized rash on your cheek right next to your mouth. It’s red and approximately the color of strawberry jam. Give it a good rub for some added color. It’s time for school picture day.Read Full Post

But it’s not enough for me to simply send you off to school, sign your folder at night and assume that you will be getting everything you need from your education. I promise not to let that be enough. I will keep in close contact with your teachers, discussing your needs and growing academic skills. I will support them and support you.

Kids. Meet your dresser. Your clothes live inside. I know you’re aware that the drawers open but did you know that they can also close? You don’t have to be old like a mom to close them either. They are specially designed to be closeable by even the most weak-sauce six-year-old. String cheese does not go in drawers. But clothes do.Read Full Post

Moms can be masters of guilt. We feel it. We dish it out. I find that no matter what parenting choice I make, I can find some way to feel guilty about it if I try hard enough. This has to stop.
