She flies through the air with the greatest of ease, that Daring Young Mom on her flying trapeze. At least she tries to make it look easy. Kathryn Thompson has been a daring young mom since she gave birth to her first child at age 24. She’s since added two more to the family circus and although she’s several years older, she still claims the title of “Young Mom” with pride. After completing a bachelors degree in Film and English and a working for a couple of years as a librarian, she's joined the ranks of women who are loving their new careers as stay-at-home moms and reaching out to each other for support and friendship.

DYM has spent a good portion of her life saying, "Go tell Mom," or "Mom can fix it." Now she is the mom. That's quite a lot of responsibility for someone who still feels like a kid on the inside.

DYM lives in the Seattle area with her computer-genius husband and three smallish people who want her to stop typing, feed them marshmallows, and play Candy Land all day, fictitiously named Laylee (born ’03), Magoo (born ’05), and Wanda (born ’09).

I don’t just cry when I watch Justin Bieber movies. I mean, I cry when I watch Justin Bieber movies, but I cry lots of other times too. But those are mostly happy tears. The tears I shed on the soccer field this summer were not.

A few weeks before our trip to Montana this summer, my mom called to suggest that I order a Groupon-type deal from the Billings Gazette. It was a coupon for cheap mini golf and rides at a local amusement park/drive-in movie theater. She didn’t know anything about the park but the deal looked good so my siblings and I all jumped on it. For nine dollars per family, we would each get an afternoon of fun. We thought.

As road-trippers go, the Thompsons are pretty much Grade A Elite Class Trippers.  My mom has taught classes on how to travel with kids and she used most of her ideas on me and my four siblings as we traveled around the US and Canada so I harvested some of my ideas from her. Others came from a great site I found called Mom’s Minivan and others I made up myself. Here are a few:

Magoo loves his baby sister. He loves her so much that he likes to give her rides around the living room even though she weighs nearly as much as him. He loves her so much that he’s not capable of realizing that babies are breakable, that there is such a thing as too much fun, that just because she’s laughing at what he’s doing, doesn’t mean it won’t kill her.

However, he might understand that last one just a bit more after our recent hair-raising road trip experience.

A family vacation should be the one time of year when you can count on your kids to be happy and grateful and to enjoy themselves. When you’re bouncing from fun activity to fun activity with family and friends in exotic locations like Montana and Utah, there should be nothing to complain about. And I’m not just talking about verbal complaints.

For years I’ve been trying to convince Dan that camping is The Best Thing Ever. Time and time again, I strike out. There was the rainy camping trip, the camping trip with the screaming baby and the ear infection, and the post-apocalyptic camp ground. After this past weekend, we can add – the camping trip with the coughing, screaming baby and the petechia. Is it possible to have a great camping trip with a baby? I’m thinking the answer is – No.

Laylee and Magoo snuggled under blankets on our neighbor’s front lawn. The ground was growing chilly and the hour was growing late but they would not go to bed until every last firecracker in the neighborhood had been lit. It was late on Independence Day evening and Magoo, though sick with a sinus infection, refused to surrender to the parental redcoats who were trying to take away his freedom.

Laylee and I held my phone in front of us, the compass on the display pointing south. Twenty meters. Ten. Then suddenly it told us we’d reached our destination. Tourists were everywhere but we saw no sign of the treasure. We looked up and down the street, trying to blend in and look like casual sightseers, but we were on a mission, looking for a small geocache in downtown Seattle.

Dum-dum-da-da-dum Da-da-da-da-dum. Do you remember the scene in Return of the Jedi when the Emperor stands with Luke in front of a large window on the new partially-built Death Star and looks out on the rebel fleet? He then surprises him by saying, “Now witness the firepower of this fully ARMED and OPERATIONAL battle station!”

Yeah, mind has been drawn back to that scene recently as I’ve witnessed Wanda's toddleric anger unleashed. At 21 months, she may be a partially-formed toddler but she is FULLY armed and operational.

Regarding your question – Why do we have to do chores EVERY DAY? We do chores every day because you trash the house every day. If you stop eating, wearing clothes, playing with toys, using the bathroom and throwing your personal effects on the floor, the chores will cease.
