She flies through the air with the greatest of ease, that Daring Young Mom on her flying trapeze. At least she tries to make it look easy. Kathryn Thompson has been a daring young mom since she gave birth to her first child at age 24. She’s since added two more to the family circus and although she’s several years older, she still claims the title of “Young Mom” with pride. After completing a bachelors degree in Film and English and a working for a couple of years as a librarian, she's joined the ranks of women who are loving their new careers as stay-at-home moms and reaching out to each other for support and friendship.

DYM has spent a good portion of her life saying, "Go tell Mom," or "Mom can fix it." Now she is the mom. That's quite a lot of responsibility for someone who still feels like a kid on the inside.

DYM lives in the Seattle area with her computer-genius husband and three smallish people who want her to stop typing, feed them marshmallows, and play Candy Land all day, fictitiously named Laylee (born ’03), Magoo (born ’05), and Wanda (born ’09).

It’s Monday afternoon and I’m waiting for Laylee at the bus stop. I have her tights and leotard on the front seat of the van and I brace myself for the sigh that will escape her mouth when I remind her that it’s Monday and SURPRISE, like every other Monday, she has ballet class.

Most colds come and go and you can move on with your life, but some colds, Never-Ending Colds of Doom come and die down a bit and then come harder. These colds are fun because you eventually need to leave the house and when you do, people glare at you. They don’t want your germs but you don’t want your solitary confinement. And so, you are at an impasse.Read Full Post

Today, as I was watching Magoo jump with his kindergarten class, my heart swelled with pride. He truly is the sweetest boy, the cutest boy and the best kid in the school. The. Best.

Every kid deserves this, to have someone love him unconditionally, to know that someone is convinced that he is the ultimate in kidness, the best of the best. I wish they all did but I know they don’t.

If your kids fully know that you’re completely unwilling to follow through on your threats, there’s no way they’ll trust you or do what you ask. I know this with my head but my heart and my laziness sometimes have a hard time laying down the smack. I give too many “chances” and then get frustrated when they whine and beg for “one more chance, just one more chance.”Read Full Post

I sat down to type a deep post about all my feelings on motherhood as we creep up on this day of days, the holiday where we celebrate our awesomeness and the awesomeness of the mothers before us. I like Mother’s Day and I love being a mother but all I can think about right now is my broken down mini-van. Somehow I think the two are connected.Read Full Post

If you came to live at my house, you’d learn some of our unwritten rules by simply watching the way my kids act.
  1. Always act surprised when someone reminds you to flush the toilet.
  2. Scream while you run.

GO!

This person scares me.  Wanda is an adventurer, an explorer, a diaper-clad warrior with a death-wish.  She likes to climb to the highest level of the playground equipment and run full speed towards the one open edge, stopping inches from the 20-foot drop, a triumphant belly laugh escaping her lips. Read Full Post

I’ve been away from home for the past three days at the AMAZING Mom Congress Conference in Washington, D.C., attending as a blogger for Parenting.  I haven’t done a lot of blogging or sleeping here.  I’ve been too busy having my mind blown.

I then stay up until all hours of the night crafting a post that doesn’t remotely do justice to what I’ve learned and the people I’ve met and then crash into bed for a few hours, rinse and repeat.  I’m exhausted in that really good, productive way.

There are days when I’m not the greatest mom, at least not on paper.  Now, I’m not necessarily a bad mom on these days but I sure look less than stellar.  These are the days when my kids tell their friends that I yell at them ALL the time when I only yell at them one or two of the times.  These are the days when they somehow slip past my watchful eye and end up at church wearing muddy tennis shoes with their baptism dress or to a formal occasion wearing a dress shirt, tie and sweatpants.  These are the days when they say I never read to them or tell their teacher I don’t feed them breakfast.  I had one of these days last week.Read Full Post

It’s time to break out the die cuts and vibrating-uvula-shaped punches because Wanda just had her first full-scale grocery store melt down and I’d like to capture this special moment properly.Read Full Post
