She flies through the air with the greatest of ease, that Daring Young Mom on her flying trapeze. At least she tries to make it look easy. Kathryn Thompson has been a daring young mom since she gave birth to her first child at age 24. She’s since added two more to the family circus and although she’s several years older, she still claims the title of “Young Mom” with pride. After completing a bachelors degree in Film and English and a working for a couple of years as a librarian, she's joined the ranks of women who are loving their new careers as stay-at-home moms and reaching out to each other for support and friendship.

DYM has spent a good portion of her life saying, "Go tell Mom," or "Mom can fix it." Now she is the mom. That's quite a lot of responsibility for someone who still feels like a kid on the inside.

DYM lives in the Seattle area with her computer-genius husband and three smallish people who want her to stop typing, feed them marshmallows, and play Candy Land all day, fictitiously named Laylee (born ’03), Magoo (born ’05), and Wanda (born ’09).

When my kids were tiny infants and I didn’t need parenting books yet but I actually had time to read them, I read something about never repeating yourself over and over again.  The idea was that children should listen the first time and by repeating yourself over and over again, you’re letting them win… or something.  Well my kids are turning into the biggest winners since Charlie Sheen because lately they will never EVER respond to my voice until I’ve repeated myself three or four or eight HUNDRED times.Read Full Post

We were about five minutes into our plan for Laylee’s birthday party when I figured out that what she really wanted to do was have her friends come over before the party with a backhoe to excavate a basement in the back yard and build a three story house out of dried bamboo and Elmer’s Glue in which to host the event.  This was not surprising.Read Full Post

Dan baptized Laylee on Saturday.  In the Mormon church kids get baptized when they’re eight or older and it’s a big special occasion with friends and family.  I made a dress for Laylee to wear afterwards and several family members flew and drove in from various states.  I had food to prepare and guests to enjoy and honestly the day is largely a blur.Read Full Post

I’ve always kept a gift drawer.  It used to be full of toys and books, baby clothes and bath salts.  Whenever it was someone’s birthday, I’d reach into the drawer, pull out a little gem, wrap it and I was done.  I liked this arrangement because it involved no urgent last-minute trips to the store and I could buy the gifts whenever they happened to be on sale cheap.Read Full Post

The kids have been on midwinter break for the past several days and they asked me the first day, “What are we going to DO?”

I wanted the break to be fun and I wanted to do some cool activities but I also had a bunch of stuff I needed to get done and tons of other school districts had the long weekend off too so I didn’t want to fight huge crowds at major attractions around town.

On Friday morning, I greeted them with news of a fun adventure.  “Kids,” I said, “We are going to IKEA!”

I was faced with this question earlier this week when a good friend of mine called to tell me that her 2-year-old daughter had come down with a mild case of the highly contagious childhood ailment.  I offered condolences and thanked her for what I thought was a warning.  I was caught off guard when she asked me if I wanted to come over for a playdate.Read Full Post

So I say read those books again and again, even if you’re sick of them.  If they’re asking, just keep reading.  Now, if I’m somehow able to convince Wanda to branch out, which picture books would you suggest?  What books do your kids love reading over and over again?Read Full Post

Laylee was mad.  The anger was sudden and strong and it was the kind of anger that grows and brews and is pretty hard to deal with patiently.  She was the kind of mad that leads to power struggles, words of parental censure, banishment to bedrooms, and lots of door slamming.

It was a couple of weeks ago and neither Dan nor I can remember what exactly set her off but it was some gross injustice like Magoo getting to sit next to Wanda at the dinner table even though it was CLEARLY Laylee’s turn.

I’ve known it was time to retire the Sunday Reverence Timers for a while now.  Then the final straw came this week when I asked Magoo to reset his to zero during church because he was goofing around.  He went hysterical, sobbing his heart out, and begging me not to reset his timer.  Begging!  He didn’t want to lose out on spending time with me.  “PLEASE DON’T RESET MY TIMER?!”

Looking at his little face, I was hit with the harsh reality of how sometimes the best parenting intentions can go terribly, terribly wrong.  What I actually thought was, “I am a horrible mother.”

To this he replied, “Yeah.  Grownups and kids both make mistakes but when kids make mistakes, they’re small little mistakes.  When grownups make mistakes, they’re BIG GIANT mistakes.”  He gave me a wry smile, his head cocked to the side, nodding.

I couldn’t help agreeing with him, even as I was cracking up, but the more I think about it, the more I think that the mistakes grownups make are not that different from those made by the little people among us.  The real difference comes in the consequences.  Here are a couple of examples.
