She flies through the air with the greatest of ease, that Daring Young Mom on her flying trapeze. At least she tries to make it look easy. Kathryn Thompson has been a daring young mom since she gave birth to her first child at age 24. She’s since added two more to the family circus and although she’s several years older, she still claims the title of “Young Mom” with pride. After completing a bachelors degree in Film and English and a working for a couple of years as a librarian, she's joined the ranks of women who are loving their new careers as stay-at-home moms and reaching out to each other for support and friendship.

DYM has spent a good portion of her life saying, "Go tell Mom," or "Mom can fix it." Now she is the mom. That's quite a lot of responsibility for someone who still feels like a kid on the inside.

DYM lives in the Seattle area with her computer-genius husband and three smallish people who want her to stop typing, feed them marshmallows, and play Candy Land all day, fictitiously named Laylee (born ’03), Magoo (born ’05), and Wanda (born ’09).

There is a decent age gap between Magoo and Wanda. I am 4.5 years more experienced as a mother, 4.5 years hotter, and 4.5 years more tired. I really thought that nearly everything would be easy peasy this time, like riding a bike. Sure, three kids meant more work but at least I'd know exactly what I was doing. Read Full Post

Wanda's life so far has been full of firsts. She rolled over for the first time at almost 2 months of age. She barfed in my eye for the first time. She's had her first case of strep throat and her first 2 ear infections. Last week she tried her first solid foods. She's worn her first fancy gown and had her first of many poo-splosions. A couple of firsts we're waiting on are first steps, first tooth and first eye roll. The other two kids have mastered all of those. Read Full Post

Sometimes it seems I go out of my way to make parenting and domesticity more complicated than it ever has to be. It happens slowly, this convolution of my motherly and homakerly duties. Sometimes I don't even notice its happening until its spiraled out of control. A good example of this is the abyss that is Wanda's sock drawer. Read Full Post

This morning I sat at a breakfast fundraiser for the Pacific Science Center in Seattle. Surrounded by business leaders and philanthropists, I felt strangely out of place because although I was invited as a member of the media to cover the event, I had really come as a mother, a mother hoping for answers and ideas, a mother frustrated with the gaps I'm already noticing in the public school system. What do your kids’ friends call you? What do you have your kids call other adults?

Growing up I clearly remember calling my friends’ parents Mr. and Mrs. Friends’ Parents. I didn’t call them Bill or Jane. The thought of it makes me laugh even now because it’s so ridiculous to me. Even my aunts and uncles were Aunt Carla or Uncle Jeff, not just Carla or Jeff. There was a respect we were expected to show the adults around us that was symbolized by the names we called them.

We often refer to Wanda as "The Fatness." See? I threw you there for a second, "Phatness" in the title, "Fatness" in the first sentence. I can use the two nicknames interchangeably because they are homonyms and because Wanda is ALL That. She is both PH and F. My cow! Just look at her.

My kids love a book called Baby Knows Best about a baby who has everything a baby could possibly ask for but all she really wants is to play with newspapers, eat food the grownups are eating, and basically have everything she’s not supposed to have. I think they like the book because it’s funny and true. My kids definitely have a “grass is greener” attitude going on. They can’t wait until they’re grownups and can have all the fun toys Dan and I enjoy, all the privileges and none of the responsibilities. Read Full Post

Today as I sat outside Laylee's piano lesson waiting for her to finish, my eyes were drawn to the tiny ballerinas whirling and twirling around the dance studio down the hall. It happened to be a class full of girls Laylee took ballet with last year. They were one year older and one year less spastic. Several of them actually resembled dancers. Watching them made me feel a little sad.

"What if Laylee's supposed to be a dancer?" I thought.

Magoo's life is filled with 5 main activities, making friends, cracking me up, crying because he's not currently playing on the Wii, telling me he's hungry, and smelling his Big Ducks. Today's post focuses on the "cracking me up" portion of his life's work. Magoo has got a lot to say and I'd like to share a little of it with you. Read Full Post
