Erin Zammett Ruddy is a seven-year survivor of chronic myelogenous leukemia and the author of the acclaimed book My So Called Normal Life, which was published by The Overlook Press in 2005. She has chronicled her battle with CML in the award-winning "Life with Cancer" column for Glamour Magazine, where she was an editor for eight years. Up until recently, she also wrote a daily blog on glamour.com that gave hope, laughs and support to thousands of young adults with cancer.

Erin is a frequent guest speaker and sits on the board of directors for both the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's New York City chapter and Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation, founded by Denise Rich. She has raised tens of thousands of dollars for cancer research and has appeared on several television programs, including Nightline, The Today Show, Dateline and Good Morning America. The University of Tennessee graduate lives on Long Island with her husband and two children. She is a full-time freelance writer (her work has appeared in Glamour, Playboy, Modern Bride, Real Simple, Redbook, and Parenting). Her cancer remains in complete remission.

There are three brand-new books I am dying to read. I actually have all of them in my house and am just waiting to finish my latest book club book (The Senator’s Wife by Sue Miller—so good!) before I start. Books and summer just go together and I’m determined to spend a decent amount of time sitting on my butt with a book in my hands in the coming months. Good luck, right? Perhaps I should read Laura’s book first! OK, here’s what’s waiting for me on my nightstand—and why I can’t wait to get reading:

As many of you know, I’m a leukemia patient/survivor. I say patient slash survivor because I am still in treatment. I always will be. My disease is chronic (chronic myelogenous leukemia) and I manage it with a pill I take every day. I had to go off that pill while I was pregnant with both Alex and Nora, which was a little risky, but obviously completely worth it.

I am prefacing this post by saying I am in no way anti-breast-feeding. And I am not trying to discourage new mothers from doing it. At all. I think breast-feeding is a wonderful choice for new moms to make, but it’s just that: A choice. That is, there are other options. Options as in formula, which, as my mommy blogger friend Rebecca Woolf once said, is not the F word.
