On Friday mornings, I try to leave for work before StoryCorps plays on NPR -- in part because if I haven't left by then, I'll be late, but also because those two minutes of radio always, ALWAYS turn me into weepy mush.

And now, they've turned these deeply personal interviews into videos!  Check out this amazing animated version 12-year-old Joshua Littman's interview with his mother, Sarah. Sarah gets major gold stars for responding to Joshua's tough questions -- he has Asperger's -- with all the right loving mom answers.  Read Full Post

Parenting.com is teaming up with NBC TODAY to find when moms think it's OK for kids to experience certain milestones. Some are inevitable -- like taking his first bath alone -- and others are more cringe-worthy, like the first time you hear, "Mom, can I dye my hair?"

The survey is now closed but be sure to tune in to TODAY on Friday , September 3rd to see Parenting's executive editor Elizabeth Shaw address these rites of passage on air.

While I was living in Stockholm last summer, I noticed that everyone was wearing Jean Seberg-style shirts with horizontal stripes.  And it wasn't just young women -- men, the grandparents, the hip, and even the little children were rocking boatneck nautical tops.  Stockholm is an archipelago, and everybody summers by the sea.  That kind of Coco-Chanel-at-the-beach look worked really well on them.

If you, too, have always wanted to bedeck your baby in haute yacht style, now you can visit the brand-new flagship Polarn O. Pyret store in Greenwich, CT. PO.P is kind of like the Swedish Gap for kids.  They're well-known in Scandinavia for their adorable unisex clothes (Angelina would approve) and good quality at reasonable prices.  Read Full Post

We, like the rest of the internets, are madly in love with the Old Spice man (actor Isaiah Mustafa).  But you know what we love most?  That he's a hot dad.  Check out the "manmercial" he made for a commenter whom we can only assume is his real life daughter: Read Full Post

Does vanilla = boring?  We don't think so.  Neither do people who used Yahoo! search in the past 30 days.  According the Yahoo! Search, "vanilla ice cream" reigns as the most sought flavor, followed by chocolate ice cream. You'd think that Neapolitan cohort strawberry ice cream would make the cut in top three, but peach ice cream is this year's bronze medalist.  Here's a list of the most popular ice cream flavors searched on Yahoo!  in the past 30 days: Read Full Post

Have a kid who is a mosquito magnet?  I understand, believe me.  A single infected bite from a bloodsucking insect can easily grow into the size of a bar of soap on my skin, the lump growing hot, hard and purple.  When I was six years old, I traveled to Thailand, my parents' home country.  It was monsoon season over there.  I got bitten by swarms of tropical mosquitoes and had to be hospitalized because my body's reaction was so severe.

If there is a mosquito in the neighborhood, it will find me.  In the summer, I rarely go out into nature without slathering myself in DEET spray, during the day and into the evening.  The AAP recommends choosing insect repellents with 30% DEET if used on children over six months in age -- but they should be used sparingly, and not at all on infants under two months.  Still, who wants to spray kids with chemicals just to be able to enjoy an early morning walk or an outdoor concert at dusk, the two times of day skeeters are most likely to feed?

That's why these Don't Bite Me! patches may just be changing my life.  Read Full Post

It's the World Cup finals this weekend! [Blowing my vuvuzela!]

It's been exhilarating to watch these strong (and oh-so-handsome) men from all over the world tearing across the green fields.  The agility, the speed, the interaction, the national character of the fans and teams have made me into a fan.  Soccer isn't as big in the U.S. as it is in the rest of the world.  My Thailand-born father insists that American football would surpass soccer's popularity in other countries if people could afford all of the equipment required for the game.

But that's the beauty of soccer -- all you need are two goals, a ball, and a space big enough to run around in.  Which is exactly what photographer Jessica Hilltout captured in her travels around Africa.  Read Full Post

TextingShould cyberbullies be punished by their schools? That's the question posed in this gut-churning article from the New York Times.  A 2010 study done by the Cyberbullying Research Center says that one in five middle-school children have been affected by bullying through phones or computers. It's Midsummer's Eve, Sweden's biggest holiday of the year.  Why are we reporting on Sweden?  Our parent company's headquarters are in Stockholm, and I'm hoping that if we raise Midsummer awareness in the States, they'll give us the day off, too (wink, wink)!

Midsummer is an old celebration of the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. It's also celebrated in Denmark, Norway and Finland. Because Scandinavia is so close to the North Pole, they experience "white nights", where the sun almost never sets. The adults feast on herring and drink loads of aquavit; the children make crowns of flowers and wear them while dancing and singing around a big, festively decorated maypole. It's pretty awesome, and I think we should start a campaign to celebrate it in the U.S., too. (We don't have nearly enough holidays in the summer.) Read more... Read Full Post

When you were a kid, how many unmarried couples did you know?  How many couples of different races did you know?  How many gay couples did you know?

And how different are those numbers now that you're an adult?

Times are changing, and with them, ideas about what makes a family.  Tonight at 8pm EST, Soledad O'Brien will be reporting on one male couple's struggles on the way to becoming parents. Here's a trailer:
