Sharing childcare duties is perhaps the biggest battle in modern-day parenting: Do moms and dads do their equal share in raising their children? Ideally, the duties are split roughly in half, right?

Plus: Why so many moms are mad at dads

This makes the findings of a study conducted by Ohio State University all the more interesting: When dads are more involved in childcare, it creates more, not less, conflict.Read Full Post

It's been a while since Mary Kay Letourneau, the former teacher infamous for her affair with a 13-year-old student, Vili Fualaau, has been in the public eye. But with the news that she recently became a grandmother, the Today Show caught up with Letourneau (now Fualaau, as the former teacher-student pair were married in 2006) and her husband.

The interesting part comes at about the 5:20 mark (if you can get that far in this uncomfortable interview), when Meredith Vieira asks Fualaau what she would say if her 13-year-old daughter was having a relationship with a male teacher. Fualaau said: "There really isn't a comparison to a male in this situation, compared to a female."Read Full Post

Mom Congress
The theme of President Obama’s State of the Union speech this past Tuesday was “Winning the Future,” and the steps needed to get there—one of which was improving education. This is important because, as Obama said, “Over the next 10 years, nearly half of all new jobs will require education that goes beyond a high school education.  And yet, as many as a quarter of our students aren’t even finishing high school.”

In his speech, Obama called for an overhaul of every major component of our education system—a lofty (but seemingly necessary) goal.

One of the age-old debates in parenting is the subject of a new study: the influence of nature versus nurture. An article in Bloomberg Businessweek reported on the study (performed at the Univ. of Texas at Austin and the Univ. of Virginia), which examined the effects of genetics and home environments on mental ability in 750 pairs of American twins, identical and fraternal and from different socio-economic levels, at ages 10 months and 2 years. At 10 months, the subjects were given cognitive tests and scored mostly the same. But at two years old, the results diverged. Children from wealthier households performed better than those from poorer homes.Read Full Post
