International test score data show U.S. firmly mid-pack (Washington Post)
"The report released Tuesday focused on reading ability and found that more than a dozen countries, from Korea to Poland, performed significantly better than the organization's statistical average in that area. The United States did not."
Michelle Rhee: What I've Learned (Newsweek)
"Right now, what we need to do is fight. We can be respectful about it. But this is the time to stand up and say what you believe, not sweep the issues under the rug so that we can feel good about getting along. There’s nothing more worthwhile than fighting for children. And I’m not done fighting."
At California School, Parents Force an Overhaul (The New York Times)
"Voicing enormous frustration with the existing school, the parents handed over the petition on Tuesday to [Compton] district officials. 'We are completely fed up,' Ms. Romero said. 'We’ve been told to wait every year and nothing changes.'"Read Full Post

What happened to the days when traveling was glamourous? These days, between the crushing costs, mile-long lines at security, and overpriced (not to mention totally crappy) food, flying leaves much to be desired.
But for some passengers, it's not the food or lines that make flying awful: it's being seated next to a wailing baby or unruly child.Read Full Post

Last May, Parenting held the first-ever Mom Congress on Education and Learning conference—and, sister, did we moms get to work! Over the course of two days, our delegates shared, inspired, and created! The culmination of their collaboration, “Lesson Plan for Change,” was published in our October 2010 issue.
Now it's time to do even more! The second Mom Congress convenes April 10 to 13, 2011, with our educational provider, Georgetown University's School of Continuing Studies, in Washington, DC. And we want you to be there (round-trip airfare and a three-night hotel stay are included). To enter, submit the following to scrapbook@parenting.com:

Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday at 2 a.m., which means the clocks get set back 1 hour (fall back!). Even though gaining an extra hour of sleep is bliss to us adults, turns out it has a pretty big effect on kids, too: To them, the time change is akin to flying cross-country into a new time zone.
